ART

Grant had always enjoyed art when he was at school and became very interested in ceramics at his secondary school, becoming more experienced in art and ceramics and then when on to art college in Sheffield.

After leaving college in 1992 grant left his ceramics behind him, his drive at that time was to create a sanctuary for unwanted animals.

Many years later in 2003 he felt that he would like to start his pottery again and with influence from a Sheffield potter he has learn the potters wheel and has developed his work to a good standard, having work in The London Road gallery in Sheffield and participated in two of the Art in the Garden at the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield.

Inspiration

Grants graden on a sunny day My inspirations for my work comes from nature I love plants and trees

I think this has a lot to do with my child hood I was always taken to parks and gardens as a small boy by my grand parents, they include Wirlow Park and of course the Botanical Gardens, all of which were in Sheffield, I think these places had some sort of influence.

My grandad was also a keen gardener, having so many hospital visits to Sheffield we use to spend time in the Botanical Gardens and the Mapping Art Gallery and Gardens, in between appointments. I became more interested in plants as I got older and I try to recreate nature into my work, it could be the color of a flower or a leaf, I do like bold strong colors.

Grants Pottery

photo of Hand painted Stoneware Pepper pot by Grant Battle The type of clay used to make my pots is called Stoneware clay; it is then given its first firing, which we call the biscuit fire this is around 980C. Then the item is glazed and fired to 1200C. This makes it suitable for every day use and dishwasher safe.

My pots are both practical for use in the kitchen and also for decorative propose e.g. plant holders and vases and all my pieces of work are hand glazed and brush painted with brightly colored glaze each having its own very distinctive design.
